24hr pH Impedance Studies

A "24hr pH Impedance Study" is a medical test that measures the amount of stomach acid and non-acidic fluid (reflux) traveling up into the esophagus over a 24-hour period, using a thin tube inserted through the nose, allowing doctors to assess if symptoms like heartburn are related to acid reflux episodes by monitoring both acidity levels and fluid movement in the esophagus throughout the day while the patient goes about their normal activities.

What it measures:

This test not only detects acidic reflux but also non-acidic reflux (which can be detected by impedance monitoring) which can be important for diagnosing certain types of esophageal issues.

Procedure:

A thin, flexible catheter with sensors is inserted through the nose and positioned in the esophagus. This catheter is connected to a recording device that the patient wears on their belt for 24 hours.

Why it's done:

To diagnose gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), especially when symptoms are not typical or when medication adjustments are needed.

During the test:

Patients can eat, drink, and carry on with their normal daily activities while wearing the monitoring device.
