Excessive Flatulence & Burps
Excessive flatulence (passing gas) and burping (belching) are common digestive symptoms often caused by the buildup of gas in the gastrointestinal tract. While occasional occurrences are normal, persistent or excessive gas may indicate underlying health issues.
Symptoms
Excessive Flatulence:
- Frequent passage of gas from the rectum.
- Accompanied by abdominal bloating, discomfort, or cramps.
- Offensive odor in some cases, depending on diet or underlying conditions.
Excessive Burping:
- Repeated expulsion of gas through the mouth.
- May occur with bloating, acid reflux, or a sensation of fullness in the upper abdomen.
- Can be accompanied by a sour taste or heartburn in gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Causes
Dietary Factors:
- Consuming gas-producing foods like beans, lentils, broccoli, cabbage, onions, carbonated drinks, or dairy (if lactose intolerant).
- Swallowing air while eating quickly, chewing gum, or drinking through straws.
Medical Conditions:
- Lactose intolerance or fructose malabsorption.
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS): A disorder of bowel function causing gas and bloating.
- GERD: Acid reflux leading to frequent burping.
- Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO): Overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine.
- Celiac disease or food allergies.
Medications or Supplements: Some antibiotics, fiber supplements, or sugar substitutes like sorbitol and xylitol.
Treatment:
Dietary Adjustments:
- Avoid gas-producing foods and carbonated beverages.
- Eat slowly and avoid chewing gum or using straws.
- Consider a low-FODMAP diet for IBS.
Medical Management:
- Antacids or proton pump inhibitors for acid reflux.
- Simethicone for breaking up gas bubbles in the stomach.
- Probiotics to improve gut microbiota.
- Lactase supplements for lactose intolerance.
